In response to requests from our valued customers, Rompa® has developed the Rest, Recovery & Re-Orientation Rooms, or ‘4R’ environments.
Designed for demanding environments such as schools with BESD (EBD) students, offenders’ institutes and prisons, these custom-made and fully-installed facilities offer a safe environment for those with challenging behaviours and aggressive tendencies.
Carefully developed in conjunction with Tony Ryall, an expert in this field, the value of these rooms is becoming increasingly apparent. In the 4R environment, clients have the opportunity to calm down, rest, recuperate and recover in a secure, robust, damage-resistant environment for a carefully monitored minimal time.
Most importantly, these environments encourage ‘re-orientation’, such as the reintroduction of the person back into their usual environment.
To be used in conjunction with positive handling and appropriate physical management practice, these facilities offer a comfortable and calming area, which can be continually viewed by teachers, supervisors or competent staff from outside the room - without putting staff resources under increasing strain.
In some cases, by replacing external factors (such as staff imposing control), these rooms can help develop internal mechanisms for calming and foster understanding of rights and responsibilities - not least clients are encouraged to manage their own behaviour. This is an extension of existing interventions for a whole range of needs, and operates with the best interests of the person as its principle to safeguard people and respect the ‘Duty of Care’.
The initiative encourages the safety of the disruptive person, his peers and supervisors alike.
Whilst risk can never be eliminated, these environments aim to significantly reduce risk, the number of potential injuries, exclusions, holding and numbers of staff required.
Children on the Autistic Spectrum may need the room as part of their Time out Plan.
These rooms, typically 2m by 3m, are one part of a wider structured programme, that includes a support plan, an intervention plan and parental responsibility. Each installation is accompanied by detailed training to ensure the appropriate and safe use of the room.
It is used in conjunction with all appropriate legislation and good practice policies.
Please note: 4R rooms are not to be used as Snoezelen®, sensory or Seclusion rooms.
